Propylene Glycol in Flavoured Coffee: Why testing matters and how we can help

Flavoured coffee is becoming increasingly popular. This trend raises the importance of propylene glycol (E 1520), a commonly used carrier for flavours, enzymes and colorants. For coffee products, this substance is a key factor when it comes to product safety and regulatory compliance.

The use of propylene glycol is clearly regulated. According to Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008, a flavoured beverage may contain a maximum of 1000 mg of propylene glycol per liter in its ready-to-drink form. It is essential that testing is performed not on the coffee or the flavouring itself, but on the prepared beverage. Since propylene glycol is fully water-soluble, nearly the entire amount ends up in the cup. This makes the exact product formulation and brewing instructions a critical control point for manufacturers.

Our laboratory provides valid and precise testing for quantifying propylene glycol in flavoured coffee beverages. This method enables reliable monitoring of your products with regard to legal maximum levels and helps maintain consistently compliant product quality.

We are happy to support you in ensuring the regulatory conformity of your flavoured coffee products.
