New limit values for ochratoxin A
Ochratoxin A is a mycotoxin that is naturally formed by moulds and occurs as a contaminant in many different foods. The infestation by moulds and the associated potential formation of ochratoxin A plays a major role during processing, transport and storage of cereals/cereal products, coffee beans and spices (for example due to unfavourable temperature and humidity conditions).
Since ochratoxin A is classified as carcinogenic and mutagenic, maximum levels in certain foodstuffs are specified in regulation (EC) no. 1881/2006 for the purpose of preventive consumer protection. In August 2022, this regulation was amended regarding the maximum levels. Thereby existing limits were lowered for roasted and soluble coffee, respectively new maximum levels were set for further foodstuffs.
As of 01.01.2023, the following limits apply to coffee beans & cocoa:
| Roasted coffee except soluble coffee |
3,0 µg/kg
|
NEW! | Cocoa powder | 3,0 µg/kg |
